My Own Private Idaho: Directed by Gus Van Sant. With River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, James Russo, William Richert. Two best friends living on the streets of Portland as hustlers embark on a journey of self discovery and find their relationship stumbling along the way. Thirty years on, Gus Van Sant's masterpiece still astounds. With their tender performances, its two stars Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix reinvigorated the pinup ideal, writes Emily Maskell. The two actors were already well on their way to becoming household names when they diverted from Hollywood's well-trodden path to star in Van Sant's third feature: a queer, cult and unprecedented title in both Reeves and Phoenix's filmographies.
The story follows two friends, Mike Waters and Scott Favor, played by River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves respectively, as they embark on a journey of personal discovery that takes them from Portland, Oregon, to Mike's hometown in Idaho, and then to Rome in search of Mike's mother. It told the story of two boys in a mental institution - and soon became a cult hit with Toronto's gay community. For, er, obvious enough reasons. According to a short documentary on the production, Reeves' character was "an innocent teen who got sucked into a relationship with a deranged boy who believes he is a werewolf.". For many reasons I believe that this is his best film because of the way in which it speaks out for the whole experience as a gay man wandering through the Americana landscape — not only as that but even as a retelling of Shakespeare of all things, somehow this odd combination could only have ever been made possible by someone like Gus Van Sant. The late, but nonetheless wonderful River Phoenix plays Mikey Waters, a homeless gay hustler suffering from narcolepsy. In these bouts of deep sleep that he suffers, he dreams of his estranged mother, who appears in his mind through the replays of home movies.
Keanu Reeves, who can turn water to wine by merely looking at it, was in a homoerotic thriller with Carl Marotte back in – and steamy photos from the play have recently resurfaced online. The actor, who shows that by not being homophobic you will never age, starred in Wolfboy as a then unknown actor.
